Nepal Prevents Tibetans from Celebrating Panchen Lama's Birthday

Tibetans in Nepal were prevented by the Nepalese officials from observing the 22nd birthday of Gedun Chokyi Nyima, the boy recognized by the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of the 10th Panchen Lama who died in 1989.

Tibetan Youth Congress, major Tibetan NGO in Kathmandu sent an appeal letter to 25 foreign embassies and United Nation's offices in Kathmandu calling for them to pressure China for immediate release of the Panchen Lama highlight the continuous detention of 11th Panchen Lama.

The boy chosen as the faith's second-most influential figure has spent almost two decades in Chinese custody. Gendun Choekyi Nyima and his parents were detained in 1995 after the six-year-old boy was recognized by the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama.
