A senior leader of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), Mr. Yashwant Sinha convened a press conference at his residence and appealed India-based Tibetan activists to stop self-immolations.

"So, my appeal to the Tibetan youth is, please live.... you cannot achieve your goal by killing yourself." said Mr. Sinha at the conference.

His statement comes after police in New Delhi detained hundreds of Tibetans, after a 26-year-old Tibetan man in exile set himself on fire to protest Chinese President's visit to the nation's capital.

Mr. Sinha condemned Indian police for using force and imposing restrictions to the Tibetans in Delhi during Hu's visit for this week's BRICS summit.

Mr. Yashwant Sinha is a senior leader of BJP and former finance minister of India. He is a member of parliament in the Lok Sabha and is one of the conveners of All Party Indian Parliamentarian Forum for Tibet.
