Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif says the military ruler who seized power from him in a coup over a decade ago should be tried for treason.
Sharif made the announcement against retired military general and former president Pervez Musharraf in front of Pakistan's parliament on Monday. He accused Musharraf of treason by suspending the constitution while in power, adding that he intends to bring "violators of the constitution to justice."
Musharraf returned to Pakistan in March after four years of self-imposed exile. He has since been living under house arrest.
The former president can only be tried for treason if the federal government presses charges against him. The Supreme Court is still holding hearings on a possible treason case against the former ruler.
Musharraf says he is innocent.
