Two monks from Taktsang Lhamo Kirti Monastery in Dzoge county, Ngaba Prefecture, Sichuan Province, set themselves ablaze around 6:30pm today. Kunchok Woser,23, and Lobsang Dawa,20, shouted slogans against China's repressive policy and died shortly after, according to VOA sources with contacts in the area.
The two joined Taktsang Lhamo Kirti monastery at a young child and were known to be exemplary students and well behaved monks.
Lobsang Dawa was from Zaru Manma village, Zoge county. He was the youngest of the seven siblings to 62 years old Dorjee Khando and his deceased wife. Kunchok Woser was a native of Tsako village, Kirti Kachukha township, in Ngaba and is survived by his two brothers, father Tsering Norbu and mother Samdup Dolma.
Taktsang Lhamo Kirti monastery was built in 1748 and has more than 700 monks.
Since February 2009, there have been a total of 113 self-immolations in Tibet and Tibetan regions reported to focus on political and religious issues, with another two self-immolations that were reported to have been motivated by property rights issues.
